Textiles A Level at Malbank School and Sixth form College
Do you love textiles? From clothes to interior design, is there something about the look and feel of textiles that appeals to you? Maybe, you’ve considered a career in textiles? Perhaps as a textile designer, seeing your unique designs woven into fabric, or maybe as an Interior Designer or Clothes Designer. If so, this course gives you the opportunity to develop your capacity to design and make products and to appreciate the complex relations between design, materials, manufacture and marketing.
- Unit 1: Materials, Components and Application 2 Hour Written Paper 25%
- Unit 2: Learning Through Designing and Making 50 Hour Coursework Project 25%
- Unit 3: Design and Manufacture 2 Hour Written Paper 25%
- Unit 4: Designing and Making Practice 60 Hour Coursework Project 25%
It is recommended that students who take this subject at A level have had some previous experience at GCSE level, in Product Design, Resistant Materials, Textiles, Graphics or Electronics with a at least a C grade. It is not an essential requirement however students would be expected to have a keen interest in Drawing, Designing, Model making or Designers/Design History.
Textile Design could take you into a number of exciting career paths. Of course being a Textile Designer is a natural outcome, but there are other job prospects. Like working as an Interior Designer or in Fashion Merchandising and Buying. The Advertising and Marketing profession always need creative people too, as does the manufacturing industry. You could also apply this A Level to your portfolio of skills as a teacher.
There is an annual trip to Birmingham to visit The Clothes Show for inspiration with future projects and to observe the industrial world of fashion retail. ICT Facilities and equipment in the Textile department are always available for students to use in free periods along with additional revision classes during study periods. There are also links with a local FE college to do workshops and see their end of year fashion show.
