A2 Level Biology at Nether Stowe School

Course description

The AQA Biology A level  is a 2 year course. It will encourage deeper thinkiingand understanding of the subject and will increase opportunities for further study and employment.  A Level Biology will also complement subjects such as Chemistry, Geography and Psychology.

Course content

This course will include the study of:

  •  Biological molecules
  •  Cells
  •  Organisms exchange substances with their environment
  •  Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms
  •  Energy transfers in and between organisms
  •  Organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments
  •  Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems
  •  The control of gene expression

Entry requirements

A Grade 6 or above in GCSE Biology, English Language and Maths


Paper 1: Written exam (2hrs, 35% weighting)

Paper 2: Written exam (2hrs, 35% weighting)

Paper 3: Written exam (2hrs, 30% weighting)

Future opportunities

You could take this course with other advanced level courses, which overlap with Biology such as Chemistry, Applied Science, Physics, Geography, Geology or more general subjects that may not relate to the sciences, to prepare for higher education. With further training, you could go into a job related to Biology or one of the other sciences such as a Doctor, Nurse, Scientist or Marine Biologist. The course will also help you to develop the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
