Mathematics A Level at Highfields School

Course description

Mathematics has developed over time as a means of solving problems and also for its own sake. Mathematics can stimulate moments of pleasure and wonder when you solve a problem for the first time, discover a more elegant solution, or notice hidden connections.

Course content

AS Course content
The course consists of two units of Core Mathematics and one unit of Applied Mathematics which, in Year 12, is Mechanics. We build on your knowledge and understanding from GCSE maths and explore new avenues of maths that will be exciting, challenging and rewarding. The Core units are made up of Algebra, Sequences & Series, Calculus, Coordinate Geometry, Trigonometry and Exponentials and Logarithms.

A2 Course content
The A2 course consists of two further units of Core
Mathematics and one unit of Applied Mathematics which, in Year 13, is Statistics. The Core units extend to those topics taught in Core Maths 1 & 2 as well as an introduction to Vectors and Numerical Methods.


AS/A2 assessment criteria
All units are assessed by an examination of 1 hour 30 minutes. There is no coursework element. Calculators are not permitted in the Core Mathematics 1 examination.
Frequent assessments will be done within school so that students are aware of their progression towards their target grade.
