Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Engineering at Formby High School

Course description

Engineering is a new subject within our existing suite of BTEC courses. This practical, applied engineering course is designed for learners who are interested in a career in the engineering sector and want to progress to further study in the sector.

Our students achieve consistently high grades in the BTEC courses, with the majority of students achieving from Merit to Distinction* grades. You will work with outstanding teachers to develop your knowledge of the engineering sector.

Engineering covers a broad variety of roles and it involves the application of scientific principle and practical knowledge to transform ideas and materials into products and systems safely and support them during their lifetime.

This qualification focuses on a broad range of engineering specialist areas. You will learn about engineering principles and mathematics, health and safety, team work, interpreting and creating computer - aided engineering, drawings, design and manufacture of products.

Course content

The course will consist of four units in order to qualify for a BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Engineering:

  • Engineering Principles
  • Delivery of Engineering Processes Safely as a Team
  • Engineering Product Design and Manufacture
  • One optional unit (to be arranged)

The course will consist of two internally assessed units, a ten hour controlled assessment and a two hour external examination paper.

Entry requirements

  • C grade in GCSE Resistant Materials (if taken at GCSE)
  • Grade 5 in GCSE Mathematics
  • C grade in GCSE Core or Additional Science

Future opportunities

As a student with a BTEC Level 3 qualification in Engineering, you have access to a wide range of possible careers and higher education opportunities. The subject is recognised by higher education providers as contributing to meeting admission requirements for a variety of courses in the engineering sector eg. BEng (Hons) in Engineering, BEng (Hons) in Electronics Engineering, BSc (Hons) in Computer Science or Mathematics.

This qualification could also lead to job opportunities in the engineering sector such as engineering operatives, semi-skilled operatives, manufacturing operatives. This qualification also supports those following an apprenticeship in engineering who are looking to work and progress in the engineering sector as an engineering operative.
