Course description

Physical Education (AQA specification 7582)

The A level Physical Education course focuses on the following key areas: applied anatomy and physiology, skill acquisition, sport and society, exercise physiology, biomechanical movement, sport psychology, and the role of technology in physical activity and sport as well as analysis and evaluation of performance which is completed as written coursework and practical performance.

It is designed to address the areas of sports and physical education from a variety of aspects and is intended to provide students with the skills to analyse and evaluate all areas using multiple choice, short and answer and extended writing skills.

Paper 1: Factors affecting participation in physical activity and
sport

• Section A: Applied Physiology.
• Section B: Skill acquisition and sports psychology.
• Section C: Sport and society and technology in sport.


Paper 2: Factors affecting optimal performance in physical
activity and sport

• Section A: Exercise physiology and biomechanics.
• Section B; Sport Psychology.
• Section C: Sport and society and technology in sport.


Non-exam assessment: Practical Performance in physical
activity and sport

• Students assessed as a performer or coach in the full sided
version of one activity.
• Written/verbal analysis of performance.

A variety of strategies are used for teaching including discussion, presentations, research and analysis, group and individual tasks, theoretical and practical activities.

Entry requirements

Grade 6 in Physical Education (or grade 6 in Biology if not studied at GCSE).

It is strongly advised that students have studied GCSE PE.

Assessment

Paper 1: 2 hours written paper (worth 35% of the A Level)

Paper 2: 2 hours written paper (worth 35% of the A Level)

Non-examination assessment (worth 30% of the A Level)
