Bricklaying Diploma Level 2 at New College Nottingham

Course description

If you enjoy doing practical things and are interested in working in the construction industry, bricklaying could be the perfect career for you.

It can be very rewarding to know that a structure you have built could potentially be around for many years to come. This course will provide you with all the basics to become part of this challenging but satisfying industry.

From repairing walls and chimney stacks to creating decorative stone archways, bricklaying is an extensive trade, which is permanently in demand. One day you could be working on a small house extension and the next could see you constructing a large commercial development.

From September 2015, our Basford Hall campus will have been completely transformed, meaning you will benefit from a brand new building and facilities. 

Course content

Studying the Brickwork Diploma will give you an excellent grounding in the construction trade as a whole, as well as in-depth and focused training, covering all of the key areas of the building industry.

On completion of the course you will have the confidence and skills to be completely ready for building site employment, not just practically but also with essential knowledge relating to carrying out safe working practices, communicating with others, knowledge of building methods and construction technology.

The course provides a combination of practical and theoretical modules to form a skills base and understanding of the trade. A range of topics will be explored, including: Building Solid Walling, Forming Masonry Structures, and Building Cavity Structures.

You will also learn about:

• Information and quantities 
• Interpreting working drawings to set out masonry structures 
• Thin joint masonry and masonry cladding 
• Isolated and attached piers

The specialist workshops at ncn Basford Hall provide a real working environment and include all the latest power tools and machinery.

Entry requirements

You must have ONE of the following:

  • 4 GCSEs (3 at grades A*-D and 1 at grade A*-E) including English and Maths
  • Level 1 Diploma in a construction discipline, plus GCSE English and Maths (1 at grade A*-D and 1 at grade A*-E)
  • Equivalent qualifications - Functional Skills may be accepted in place of GCSE Maths and/or English

Adults 19+ who have industry experience but do not have the necessary qualifications are welcome to apply.

Assessment

It will include a multiple choice paper, a practical assessment and an external online test.
