Maths AS Level at Derby College

Course description

AS Mathematics – Pure Mathematics is assessed in modules Pure Core 1 and Pure Core 2.  You will also study Decision Maths.

A2 Mathematics – Your Pure Maths will be developed in Pure Core 3 and Pure Core 4, and for the applied module you will study either Mechanics or Statistics.

Mathematics also develops your ability to solve problems and think in a logical way.

 

Course content

n the Core Modules your skills and knowledge of algebra, coordinate geometry, trigonometry and graphs will be developed, and you will also be introduced to logarithms and calculus. 

In Decision Maths you will study networks and how an algorithm is used to solve a problem. 

In Statistics you will extend your knowledge of probability and the numerical measures commonly used when dealing with data.  You will  also look at different types of data.

In Mechanics you will investigate forces and motion.

Entry requirements

For AS Maths you need at least four GCSEs at grade C or above, including a grade B in English Language.  In addition, you also need at least a grade B in GCSE Mathematics.  You will also need to pass our own assessment of your algebra skills to ensure these are well developed enough for you to succeed on the course.

To progress to A2 Mathematics you should have gained at least a grade D on the AS core modules and at least a grade D overall.

Assessment

Your progress will be monitored throughout the year.

Formal assessment is by examination in May/June 2016.

Each module studied has an examination.  Pure Core 1 is a non-calculator examination.

There is no coursework for AS/A2 Maths.

Maths goes well with many other subject combinations and is well regarded across employment sectors and higher education institutions.

You could consider careers in areas such as:

  • Architecture and design
  • Accountancy, business and finance
  • Sciences

A high grade in Mathematics is often required if you wish to study Mathematics, Engineering, Architecture or Economics at university.  It is also useful for any degree in Science subjects, Finance or Computer Science.  Some of our learners also go on to study Mathematical Education.
