Students who study chemistry to A level might ultimately work in the chemical industry, become doctors, dentists, pharmacologists and environmental scientists. They are able to work in areas as diverse as publishing, technical writing, patent law, intellectual property law, finance and investment analysis as well as in the public services, academia and teaching.
The course will focus on:
- Foundations of chemistry
- Applications of chemistry
- Organic chemistry
- Rates of reaction
- Chemical energetics
A number of courses either specifically require or find it desirable to have an AS/A2 in Chemistry. These include courses such as Chemical Engineering, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Biological Sciences, Environmental Science, Pharmacy and Dentistry.
You will need to have achieved a B/A* grade for GCSE Chemistry or BB /A*A* for Double Science, plus an B/A* in Mathematics. Chemistry is a challenging A-level and if you hope to study it you will need to demonstrate strong academic ability. If you are studying GCSE Applied Science/ OCR Nationals you will not be able to take science A-levels.
