Spanish at Merchant Taylors' Girls' School

Course description

In a very competitive world a modern foreign language can certainly be an advantage in terms of future employment prospects and Spanish combines very well with all subjects.

A wide range of resources from ipods and the newest text books to specialist online resources, films and fiction are used to help each AS/A level Spanish student fulfil her potential. Lively discussions take place in lessons, which focus on issues which are of particular interest to young adults. It is important to learn about the culture of Spanish speaking countries and teaching materials are therefore drawn from not only Spain but also from Latin America.

Listening, reading, and writing skills will be developed through a variety of activities and students are encouraged to work independently in order to develop strong study skills. All students have a weekly lesson with a native speaker, which improves oral competency and increases confidence. A grammar clinic takes place each week to support students and helps to improve accuracy.

Students are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to undertake work experience in Spain and many girls have thoroughly enjoyed their time working in hotels, restaurants, shops and even a football club. The chance to use Spanish in an authentic setting brings studies to life and provides a wonderful boost to fluency.

Entry requirements

An enjoyment of language learning, an interest in the world around us and a good GCSE grade (preferably A*) are the main requirements for studying A level Spanish.
