Course description

Unit 3: (PROD3) Design & Manufacture (50% of A2 Marks)

The content of this exam is divided into two sections with a choice of three questions from six. Students are required to answer one question from each section and also a final question from either section. The paper will test the candidates understanding of the connections between the different elements of the subject and their holistic understanding of the subject. 

Unit 4: (PROD4) Design & Making Practice (50% of total A2 Marks)

Written (or electronic) design portfolio. The design portfolio will focus on a single substantial design activity which is then transformed into a manufactured outcome. The choice of design is extremely wide and depends upon each student’s skills and interests.  Coursework may take a number of forms; a single design-and-make project, two smaller projects and/or a portfolio of work.

Course content

This course allows you to develop your own design style and build a comprehensive set of modelling and manufacturing skills. It will enhance your problem solving abilities and build on your understanding of the whole design process. The course will enable you to progress onto a range of design based courses in higher education as well as providing you with the opportunity to build your portfolio of work which could prove vital in securing positions on apprenticeship or in employment in the design and manufacturing industry.


Unit 3: This consists of a written exam which is taken in June and involves of a series of essay style questions covering the following topics: Section A: Materials and Components, Section B: Design and Market Influences, Section C: Processes and Manufacture.

Unit 4: A coursework module is completed throughout the first two terms ready to hand in at Easter – this unit should be at least 50 hours of work and will be assessed by two methods: a practical assessment and a written portfolio.
