Art and Design Level 3 Diploma Extended Certificate at Long Road Sixth Form College

Course description

The Art and Design Level 3 Extended Certificate is an ideal qualification if you want to learn a broad range of art and design skills. The course covers a wide range of areas, providing new, stimulating challenges in practical and theoretical experiences, across many different aspects of art and design, whilst placing your learning within a professional context.

This course is equivalent to one A Level.

Course content

Specialist unit

There is one specialist unit:

Fine Art , Materials, Techniques and Processes

You will learn a range of media and techniques working in the following specialisms: painting, printmaking, digital and traditional black and white photography, graphics, 3D and textiles.

Mandatory units

Alongside the specialist unit, there are three mandatory units. These are:

Visual Recording and Communication

You will develop your visual recording and communication skills through exploration and experimentation with materials and methods, gaining confidence in your ability to create work and express and communicate ideas. You will be given a theme and a task to prepare and respond to in an assessment period.

Critical and Contextual Studies in Art and Design

You will develop contextual research and critical analysis skills. You will investigate the contextual influences on practitioners that drive and underpin their work. You will be given a research brief and task before the five hour assessment period. This will be a visual and written submission.

The Creative Process

You will explore and experiment with ideas generating techniques and contextual research activities. You will develop your ideas through using a range of materials, techniques and processes, refining your ideas and reviewing your working practices. The work produced in this unit can form part of a portfolio for progression to higher education or the workplace.

Throughout the course it is also expected that you will both attend lectures held by and work alongside external practitioners from various fields of the creative industries. You will also be able to take part in art and design-related trips, here and abroad. These include to museums both locally and in London.


You will be assessed by a combination of internally-assessed assignments and externally-set and marked assessments.








Entry requirements

At least five Grade 4s or equivalent in a range of subjects at GCSE level, including GCSE English.


A Merit grade in an OCR or BTEC Certificate in a related area (6-credit qualification), and a Grade 4 or above in GCSE English. Students with a distinction grade in a related area (6-credit qualification) may be considered with a Grade 3 in GCSE English.

In addition you need at least a Grade 4 or equivalent in Art at GCSE level.



You will be assessed by a combination of internally-assessed assignments and externally-set and marked assessments.
