Course description

AS Level

Unit 1 - Poetry & Drama (post 1900)

In this introductory unit students will have the opportunity to explore the work of two key 20th century poets, Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes, and to study Brian Friel’s acclaimed play Dancing at Lughnasa.

Unit 2 - Prose Study & Creative Reading

This cours coursework unit encourages students to read widely and engage with a variety of prose texts. In their Prose Study students will examine F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novella, The Great Gatsby. For their Creative Reading coursework students will produce their own piece of creative writing in response to a stimulus text.

A2 Level

Unit 3 - Period & Genre Study

For this coursework unit, students will produce a folder of approximately 3000 words consisting of an exploration of three texts from different periods and genres.

Unit 4 - Poetry & Drama

InIn this unit, students will study one of the following pre-1800 poetry texts: The Wife of Bath’s Prologue and Tale (Chaucer); Selected Poems (John Donne); Paradise Lost Book IX (Milton); Songs of Innocence and Experience (Blake); Lyrical Ballads (Wordsworth & Coleridge). Students will also study a key Shakespeare play, with reference to a second key dramatist (Sophocles, Tourneur, Webster or Marlowe)

Entry requirements

The minimum requirement for a GCE AS/A2 course is 6+ grades A*-B at GCSE or equivalent. For a student to study at GCE AS/A2 a subject that they studied at GCSE they must have achieved at least a grade B in that subject at GCSE where the subject requires previous study
