Music Technology A Level at Grace Academy Darlaston

Course description

The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Music is an Applied General qualification. It is for post-16 learners who want to continue their education through applied learning and who aim to progress to higher education and ultimately to employment in the music sector. The qualification is equivalent in size to two A Levels, and it has been designed as part of a two-year programme, normally alongside a further Level 3 qualification. Learners who wish to take this qualification will have successfully completed a Level 2 programme of learning with GCSEs or vocational qualifications.

Course content

The content of this qualification has been developed in consultation with academics to ensure that it supports progression to higher education. Employers and professional bodies have also been involved and consulted to confirm that the content is appropriate and consistent with current practice for learners planning to enter employment directly in the music sector.

Learners taking this qualification will study six mandatory units: Music Performance Brief / Music Skills Development / Creating a Music Product / Music Composition Brief / Professional Practice in the Music Industry / Music in Context.

Learners choose two optional units to support their progression to a range of sector-related courses in higher education, and to link with relevant occupational areas. Optional units cover content areas such as: Arranging Music / Composing Music/ Music Promotion / Solo Performance / Live Music Events / Music Performance Session Styles.

5 A*-C grades at GCSE (including Maths and English)


Future opportunities

In addition to the music sector specific content outlined above this qualification gives learners transferable and higher order skills that are valued by higher education providers and employers. For example, teamwork, performance and communication skills support some of the skills learners need to progress to higher education, employment, self-employment or training in the sector.
