Art & Design (GCSE) at St Columba's Catholic Boys' School

Course description

Art and Design surround us in Advertising, Textiles, Record Covers, Magazine Layout, Film, as well as Paintings, Sculpture and Ceramics. The aim of this course is to translate a natural interest in the visual world into an ability to understand and handle visual language. We offer opportunities to boys of all abilities; and through an experience of the possibilities of a variety of media, students have the chance to discover where their individual talents and interests lie. Work includes Painting and Drawing, Three Dimensional Work and Graphic Design. An ability to research and develop ideas independently is essential over the period of the course. Exploring the work of artists from a variety of periods and cultures is important, as is learning to use a technical vocabulary. There is regular homework linked to coursework themes and objectives. Students need at least a small supply of basic materials (various grades of pencil, fine line pens, and coloured pencils or watercolours for example) for homework purposes. GCSE Examination: Art and Design (Unendorsed) - For this a broad range of coursework, in two and three dimensions in a variety of techniques is needed, together with critical/contextual studies. 60% of the mark will go to the three units of coursework (each unit may consist of several linked studies and 40% to the results of the controlled test. The subject would be of clear benefit in many jobs requiring fine judgement of mind, eye and hand; for example, in the world of fine arts and architecture and also in advertising and commercial design - display work and sign writing - the print trades - screen and lithographic printing - photography and cinematography - cartography - textile design - teaching and interior / landscape design.
