Course content

The RSL specification has four separate criteria at the Extended Diploma. For the
Extended Diploma, students study all three units:

  • Performance
  • Technology
  • Business and Composition

180 credits are needed to achieve the Extended Diploma, with a Pass, Merit or Distinction awarded for the separate criteria.

Entry requirements

Music students should be passionate about their subject area, with creative ideas and a genuine interest across many musical genres. They ideally would have ABRSM grade 5 (or equivalent) and extended knowledge regarding the theory of music, as well as a good grade at GCSE Music, or a Distinction at Level 2 RSL.

The separate criteria for the RSL has three different assessment strands:

  • externally assessed core units,
  • internally assessed core units
  • internally assessed option units

It is this marking scheme that generates the credits that make up the final grade.

Future opportunities

Students who study RSL have a solid understanding and foundation to take their skills to the next level with the UK music industry. This could include performing, business planning, project management, freelance artist, events management, and marketing and promotions.
