Sport, Exercise and Fitness : Level 2 at Gateway College
Course description
It is for students with lively enquiring minds with an ability to lead others in practical situations and who wish to work in some aspect of sport. This course aims to develop your knowledge and understanding of a range of activities and environments within the sports sector. Gateway College is proud of its state of the art sports facilities and you will specialise in different aspects of sport performance, lifestyle and well-being and fitness to develop relevant skills for work in the sport sector.
Work placements will be encouraged on this course and your maths and English skills will also be developed.
This qualification is equivalent to 3 GCSEs.
Course content
This course is assessed by a combination of coursework and exams. You will be required to participate fully in all practical aspects of this course. In addition to this your timetable will enable you to explore employment opportunities through work experience. A willingness to engage in and independently seek these opportunities is strongly encouraged.

Entry requirements
GCSEs at grade D and E (3/4), or Pass in a Level 1 Vocational Programme, including English Language and Maths grade 3 or Functional Skills Level 1.
Assessment
You will study 3 mandatory unit and 4 optional specialist units.
Mandatory Units:
Participating in sport (6 credits)
Anatomy and physiology for exercise (6 credits)
Introduction to healthy exercise and nutrition (6 credits))
Optional Units:
You will study 9 optional units including:
Development of personal fitness through training, Plan and deliver an activity session, Injury and the Sports Performer, Running a Sports Event and Designing Exercise Programmes

Future opportunities
The broad subject content that is covered in Physical Education and Sport enables students to progress onto a wide range of careers. As a consequence of the skills and knowledge developed on these courses students have the option of enrolling onto Level 3 Sport at Gateway or entering into ‘the world of work’. Some of the more popular career options have been: Recreation/Leisure Centre Employment, Coaching/Managing, Health & Fitness Industry or Professional Sport.
