Philosophy AS & A Level at NewVIc

Course description

For centuries, human beings have been absorbed with questions about the nature of the universe and their place within it. Philosophy will enable you to develop the critical skills to deal with these questions and help you to begin finding some answers. It will also introduce you to some of the most interesting and important ideas in history.

Course content

The course will focus on:

  • understanding key philosophical ideas and thinkers
  • exploring ideas about God and the nature of existence
  • exploring moral Philosophy and how to deal with ethical problems such as war and euthanasia
  • examining the nature of the human mind
  • examining the basis of human knowledge

On the course you will:

  • develop your thinking skills
  • participate in arguments, debates and discussions
  • explore key ideas in terms of film and literature
  • present your ideas and arguments in essays

Philosophy is a challenging subject that will enable you to think creatively and logically. it should empower you to think for yourself on a wide range of issues. If you’re not sure about what Philosophy really is, a member of the Philosophy team will be happy to discuss the subject with you.

Entry requirements

You will need to have averaged grade B in the majority of your GCSEs, and have at least a grade 6 in English. You will need strong writing and reasoning skills to cope with the demands of this subject.


Assessment is by examination at the end of the second year.

Future opportunities

Philosophy is an excellent subject if you plan to study law, humanities, or social sciences at degree level. It is particularly valued by Russell Group universities. As this subject deals with logical thinking and analytical reasoning, it provides thorough preparation for the skills needed in higher education and professional life.

    • Newham Sixth Form College (NewVIc) is London's largest sixth form college, offering full-time courses for 16 to 19-year-olds. NewVIc offers over 50 A Level subjects, 31 level 2 and 3 vocational programmes, as well as foundation, entry level and ESOL programmes.

      It is a diverse and friendly learning community, with an outstanding record of achievement. In 2013, 767 students progressed to university (91% of all applicants); 130 students gained places at the most selective universities, including 60 at Russell Group universities.

      The NewVIc Honours Programme is unique and provides academically gifted students with specialist pathways, a tailored curriculum and support for progression to the most selective universities.

      NewVIc has excellent sports facilities and is one of four London colleges accredited with Sports Leadership status. The college's extra-curricular enrichment programme is aimed at developing employability and leadership skills through various activities including mentoring, the Student Union and volunteering in the community.
