Philosophy and Ethics (RE) A Level at Queensbury Academy

Course description

This is a course based upon Philosophy of Religion, Religious Ethics and the development of religious thought and ideas.

Course content

The course comprises three modules. The Philosophy element contains the major Greek influences on Western Philosophy. We study some of the traditional arguments that attempt to prove the existence of God and challenges to religious belief from the problem of evil. In addition, we explore major issues in the philosophy of religion such as life after death, the nature of the soul, the nature of God, religious language and religious experience.

The Ethics element contains various major ethical theories including Kantian ethics, Utilitarianism, Natural Law, Virtue Ethics, Situation Ethics and Egoism. We learn to apply these and explore deeply practical issues such as sexual ethics and euthanasia. We also analyse philosophical issues in ethics such as metaethics (ethical language), the nature of the conscience, free will and determinism, and the relationship between ethics and religion.

The third element focuses on the development of religious thought on human nature, immortality and revelation. We study different ways of interpreting the Bible and analyse the development of beliefs about Jesus. We also explore challenges to religious belief from secularism and social sciences.

Entry requirements
