Computer Science Level 2 at Coleg y Cymoedd

Course description

This course offers you the opportunity to study computing from both theoretical and practical applications. You will gain the knowledge and experience required, enabling you to support and maintain computer systems.


Course content

You will study units such as: Communicating in the IT Industry; Developing Mobile Apps, Maintaining Computer Hardware, Computational Thinking; Multimedia Products, Software Development, Spreadsheet Modelling and Database Systems.

You will also study the Welsh Baccalaureate Intermediate including Essential Skills Wales, where you will explore a wide range of areas including Wales, Europe and the World; Work-related Education and Personal and Social Education.

Entry requirements

You will require 4 GCSEs at grades A*- D including English and Maths or a Welsh Baccalaureate with a Level 1 Information Technology or related vocational area qualification.

You will be invited to attend an interview and will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy to establish any support required.


Evidence for assessment may be generated through a range of diverse activities including workplace assessment, assignments, role play and oral presentation. There will be formal examinations for some units. The Welsh Baccalaureate and Essential Skills assessments are via portfolio evidence and a higher project. Whereas the assessment approach of the Level 2 Diploma in Information Technology allows you to receive feedback on your progress throughout the course as you provide evidence towards the grading criteria.

Future opportunities

On completion of the course you will gain the skills required for employment. With further training or study, you can progress into careers such as: End User Support Technician, Trainee IT Support Officer or Technician. The course is a good grounding for progression to the Level 3 Diploma in Information Technology and Telecoms with Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced and other Level 3 and AS and A2 courses.
