Gamekeeping and Wildlife Management - Intermediate and Advanced Apprenticeship at Askham Bryan College

Course description

 ‘On the job’ training at your place of work with some college based study at our college estate and gamekeeping unit on the York campus.

Course content

The Work Based Diploma includes practising and demonstrating a range of practical skills relevant to your work placement and agreed between you, your employer and the College; examples could include managing the production of game for human consumption, and developing good public relations for a sporting estate.

The Intermediate Apprenticeship comprises the Work Based Diploma at Level 2 plus functional skills (English, Maths). 

The Advnaced Apprenticeship comprises on the Wrok Based Diploma at Level 3 plus funsctional skills.  The course includes emergency first aid, equality and diversity, manual handling. The opportunity exists to take one or more nationally recognised legislative test (such as Safe Use of Pesticides or Chainsaw Operation) - charges may apply to the student or employer

Entry requirements

Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship - no formal qualification required, but a placement in a relevant workplace is required.


For the Advcanced Apprenticeship you normally need to have successfully completed Level 2 and/or have considerable work experience. You need an appropriate work placement or employment which involves a level of responsibility. We may be able to help you find a suitable position.

Further study:

Move to a level 3  Advanced Apprenticeship or equivalent full-time study. Move on to degree level study, for example the Foundation Degree in Countryside management and, if you are successful, then on to the BSc Honours ‘top up’ degree.
