Sports Studies - Level 2 Diploma at Redcar & Cleveland College

Course description

The VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Sports Studies prepares students for employment in the Sport, Leisure and Fitness Industry, but ultimately, prepares learners with a progression route to the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sports Studies. It is highly recommended for those wishing to study Higher Education and gain a professional career in sport in the long-term.


Course content

To achieve this Diploma, candidates must complete a total of 6 units. 4 mandatory and 2 optional:

  • Anatomy and Physiology for Sport
  • Psychology for Sports Performance
  • Planning and Leading Sports Activities
  • Business Skills in Sport
  • Nutrition for Sports Performance
  • Planning and Running a Sports Event

Maths and English are an important aspect of your programme and will form part of your timetable, as will Work Placement hours within your chosen career pathway.

Entry requirements

There are no formal prerequisite qualifications that you must have prior to undertaking this qualification, however the following are desirable:

  • 4 GCSE grade D-G’s or
  • Level 1 Certificate in Sport & Active Leisure Studies


Throughout the programme students are continually assessed using a variety of methods, e.g. assignments, observations, practical assessment, presentations. Guest speakers and coaches will be used to give learners a different perspective, and to demonstrate skills used within a professional environment.

Financial information

Learners are expected to purchase either the standard sports kit (hoodie, performance t-shirt and shorts) or the Football Development Centre academy kit (if applicable), not both. It is expected that this will be worn during all practical sessions that you participate in. Further details on what items to purchase, how to purchase, costings, sizes and colours will be made clear when you come to enrol on the course.

Some trips, visits or residentials may require a contribution from students, but notification will be made in advance.

Future opportunities

On completion of the course students will have the opportunity to progress onto the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sports Studies, which is a 2 year programme of study and will provide the equivalent of 3 A Levels. This provides the pathway for application onto Higher Education in a Degree such as; Applied Sport & Exercise Science, Sports Therapy, or Sports Studies, etc. Alternatively students may wish to undertake the Foundation Degree at Redcar and Cleveland College in Sports Coaching & Exercise.
