Site Carpentry Level 2 Diploma at Milton Keynes College

Course description

Do you have a passion and keen interest in going into the Construction Industry? Then this intense but enjoyable course is for you.

It will take between 2 and 3 years to become a Carpenter; the Diploma units will match up with the NVQ if you decide to progress on to this qualification.

Course content

You will cover units in the following:

  • Carry out safe working practices in construction
  • Information, quantities and communicating with others
  • Knowledge of building methods and construction technology
  • Know how to carry out first fixing operations
  • Know how to carry out second fixing
  • Functional Skills*


*Functional skills qualifications are designed to provide the necessary levels of English and maths skills needed to ‘function’ in today’s society and workplace. They are a key component of all College Programmes. You will complete at least 1 Functional Skill at an appropriate level as part of your programme.

Entry requirements

A minimum 6 points to include 2 GCSEs at grade D or above, one of which must be English. Equivalent qualifications in relevant discipline will be accepted with GCSE English at Grade D or above.

To progress to Level 2 you will be expected to achieve or already hold a full level 1 qualification in carpentry.


You will be continually assessed during the course through set project work. You will also have to do a GOLA exam. Functional Skills are assessed by on-line exams and you will be given guidance and support to achieve these.

Future opportunities

Upon successful completion of the course, you can progress to Level 3 Diploma in Carpentry, and then on to HND/HNC, employment, or an Apprenticeship.
