Aims of the course

The aims of the Advanced Subsidiary and Advanced Edexcel GCE in Art and Design encourage students to develop:

 intellectual, imaginative, creative and intuitive powers

 investigative, analytical, experimental, practical, technical and expressive skills, aesthetic understanding and critical judgement

 independence of mind in relation to developing their own ideas, refining their own intentions and personal outcomes

 an interest in, enthusiasm for, and enjoyment of art, craft and design

 experience of working with a broad range of media, including traditional and new media technologies

 an understanding of the interrelationships between art, craft and design processes and an awareness of the contexts in which they operate

 experience of working within relevant and real frameworks and, where appropriate, make links to the creative industries

 knowledge, understanding and application of art, craft, design and media and technologies in contemporary and past societies and cultures

 an awareness of different roles, functions and audiences and consumers of art, craft and design practice.

Programme of Study:

Students will work in a variety of disciplines at the start of the AS course: drawing and painting, photography, textiles, sculpture and printing. Students will then select 2 disciplines to refine and develop through the AS and A2. All students will do contextual study and input this through their own work. There will be opportunities for students to engage with new media and technologies.

AS OUTLINE:

Unit 1: Personal portfolio teacher directed theme: 60%

Unit 2: Externally set assignment: 40%

A2 OUTLINE:

Unit 3: Personal portfolio student directed: 60%

Unit 4: Externally set assignment: 40%

Who is the course aimed at?

We are looking at students who have a real passion for the subject, who believe in Art and are committed to developing their knowledge and skills. They need to be willing to experiment and take risks and enjoy exploring different disciplines. Art is an exciting subject to study and can lead to different careers within Fashion, advertising, architecture, theatre design etc.
