Art AS A2 at Northampton School for Girls

Course description

The study of Art through individual development and theoretical studies, provides opportunities for personal expression, imagination, conceptual thinking, developing powers of observation and improving analytical skills. You will be expected to respond to visual stimuli in a range of media and have the opportunity to demonstrate your imagination and creativity. You will also be given the chance to make a detailed and extended study into an aspect of the visual arts that interests you.

Course content

Teaching and Learning Styles. The use of working sketch books and prep-sheets, demonstrations, audio-visual material, problem solving, discussion, organisation of research and visiting galleries.AS Level UnitsUnit 1Two research projects, one to include a study of 3D sculpture using a variety of materials such as wire, plaster, clay and card. Two research projects based in skills development. 3D sculpture using a variety of materials such as wire, plaster, clay and card, print making using a variety of techniques such as etching, collagraph lino and various other forms of intaglio and relief.Unit 2A personal investigation that relates to the discovery and exploration of an aspect of art that interests the student. This unit is based in contextual studies and is expressed as an illustrated written assignment. A gallery visit is a compulsory requirement for this Unit and Unit 5.Unit 3Externally Set Assignment - given at beginning of autumn term, preparation work leading to timed 'piece' at the end of the course. A2 Level UnitsUnit 4A specialist project that builds on your knowledge and understanding of the skills acquired in Unit 1. Your final piece may be in 3D sculpture, print or a compilation of both. This unit is a development of Unit 1 but shows a greater depth of study.Unit 5This unit is a development of Unit 2 “A personal investigation” but shows a greater depth of study using a variety of materials and may include drawing, painting, printing, mixed media and skills acquired in Units 1, 2 and 4.Unit 6Externally set assignment - developing own theme/topic to highlight the extent of personal development throughout the course.

Your qualifications should include a minimum of a grade B in Art.

Assessment All units weighted separately:AS - Units 1-3 30%, 30% and 40% (15%, 15% and 20% if full A level qualification)A2 - Units 4-6 15%, 15% and 20%
