Applied Science BTEC Level 2 First Certificate at Amersham and Wycombe College

Course description

This course is for anyone who has a genuine interest in science and a desire to progress to higher level study and on to employment or higher education in the sciences. You may have not studied the range of science subjects at GCSE, or not have achieved the grades required for further science study at level 3 - this course is an ideal way for you to gain the skills and qualifications required.

Course content

This course contains 12 different modules covering the main science subjects, applied to today's world. Units include:

- Biology and our Environment
- The Living Body
- Science and Medicine
- Energy and our Universe.

You will also have an opportunity for independent research through a science based project.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements for the course consist of 4 GCSE at grade D with at least one of these being mathematics or English. You must also be able to demonstrate your interest and enthusiasm for science. You will also undertake study in English and mathematics if you have not achieved GCSE grade A*-C or equivalent.



The BTEC First Extended Certificate Course is assessed in a number of ways, many of which involve practical tasks and projects. Two of the twelve units are assessed externally via time-constrained assessments.


Financial information

Lecturers will advise you which learning materials and books you will need to buy. You will need to purchase a laboratory coat and protective goggles.


Future opportunities

On successful completion of this course you can apply to the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Applied Science.
