Psychology - As and A2 at Downend School

Course description

Are you interested in understanding what causes mental illnesses? Why the police adopt certain questioning techniques? How your body responds to stress? Then Psychology AS could be the course for you.

AS Psychology students need to be inquisitive and active participators in discussion that is focused on questioning theory and research. AS Psychology students need to be interested in conducting research on their peers and able to apply their inquisitiveness to analysing and evaluating their findings.

Unit 1 – Cognitive Psychology, Developmental Psychology and Research Methods

Unit 2 – Biological Psychology, Social Psychology and Individual Differences


Are you interested in understanding sleep and sleep disorders? How crowds can influence aggressive behaviour? Why some people develop addictions and others do not?

A2 Psychology further develops students’ knowledge and understanding of some of the core areas studied in AS through 2 units that comprise 3 topics each.

Unit 3 – Topics in Psychology

(a) Biological rhythms and sleep

(b) Perception

(c) Relationships

(d) Aggression

(e) Eating behaviour

(f) Gender

(g) Intelligence and learning

(h) Cognition and development.

Unit 4 – Psychopathology, Psychology in Action and Research Methods

As for AS Level but with more opportunity for independent research, presentations, group work. There will be emphasis on looking at themes and debates that run through psychology and the coursework provides valuable “hands on” experience and the satisfaction of seeing through a complete project of your own. Psychology is ideal for encouraging life-long learning. The subject matter is always relevant in some way to whatever stage of life you are at.

Entry requirements

AS: Grade B in GCSE Science

A2: Grade D in AS Psychology
