German A-Level at Derby High School

Course description

AS and A2 (i.e. full A level)

A study of German includes work in both language and, for A2, literature. All pupils considering languages should have taken higher papers in all four skills at GCSE and achieved at least a B grade.

Why study languages?

We live in an era in which communication is vital. Whatever career you are considering, whether business, medicine, law, media, science or technology, communication skills are of paramount importance in today’s world. An ability to speak another language is a valuable skill, highly prized by employers. In this world of globalisation, knowledge of a foreign language helps us to appreciate other cultures and to communicate with people of different nationalities, for both business and pleasure. A language at Advanced Level combines well with almost any other subject in the curriculum and can lead to the study of a language at university or indeed any number of combined degree courses now on offer, many of which involve a period of study or work abroad.

Entry requirements

Seven full GCSE passes (including English and Maths) at Grade B or above with at least a B in those subjects that the student wishes to study.
