English Literature A level at Central Foundation Girls' School

Course description

This course will suit you if you enjoy reading and engaging in critical debate about texts. If you dislike reading, this course is not for you!

Course content

Unit 1: Love through the Ages: Shakespeare and Poetry
You will study one Shakespeare play and one AQA Anthology of Love Poetry

Unit 2: Love through the Ages: Prose
You will study two prose texts and a range of unseen prose extracts

A Level
Unit 1: Love through the Ages
You will study three texts: one poetry and one prose text, one of which must be written pre- 1900, and one Shakespeare play. They will also study a range of unseen poems.

Unit 2: Texts in Shared Contexts
Students will study three texts: one poetry, one prose and one drama, one of which must be written post-2000. They will also study a range of unseen extracts.

Independent Critical Study: Texts across Time
Students will write an extended essay comparing two texts, one of which must have been written pre-1900.

Entry requirements

 5 good GCSEs with 5 in En PLUS


2 x 1 hour 30 minute exams sat in June

A Level
Paper 1 – 3 hour exam sat in June
Paper 2 – 2 hour 30 minute exam sat in June
Extended Essay – internally assessed.

Future opportunities

English Literature is a well-established subject giving, at AS and A2 level, a qualification for higher study in a wide range of specialist subjects. Through English Literature you’ll also develop excellent training in communication, which is valued by employers.

Further information

English Literature lessons vary in structure and we place an emphasis on collaboration as well as independent study skills. Activities include class debates, group discussion and independent reading and writing. We study academic writing skills as well as the set texts.
