Business BTEC Level 3 National Foundation Diploma at Leeds City College

Course description

Are you interested in a career in business? Do you aspire to run your own company?  If so, this new, exciting and challenging programme in business is for you. The qualification runs over one year and could be your first step towards securing ‘The Dragons’ investment’. 

The course is designed to be the first year of a 2 year programme to support progression to university, or increase your existing UCAS points to help you get to university once completed. 

You will study a range of industry relevant business areas, preparing you for employment within the industry.


Course content

You will study:

  • Exploring Business
  • Developing a Marketing Campaign
  • Personal and Business Finance
  • Managing an Event
  • Two other business related topics from a list of 11 areas of study

In addition, you will have support to help you achieve your highest grade and work placement opportunities.

Entry requirements

Students wishing to enrol onto a level 3 programme should come with a range of qualifications, including a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above in maths and English and grade C or above in all other subjects, or equivalent.

There will also be a vocational assessment which will need to be passed at the interview stage.

Students should have a genuine interest in business and a commitment to complete homework and independent study by agreed deadlines.


Assessment is through portfolio, assignments and external assessments. Your course teachers will guide you through the assignment criteria for each unit and make sure you are prepared to achieve your best.

Your options after completing this course are: 

Continue to year 2 and top up to the full Extended Diploma in Business

Continue to year 2 and top up to the full Diploma in Business 

Continue to year 2 but study IT in either the Certificate, Extended Certificate or Foundation Diploma. 

Apprenticeship or employment.

Further information

In your second year, you will have the opportunity to take part in a work placement and put what you have learned into practice. You will gain valuable experience that will support yon in applying for either university, work or an apprenticeship.


English and Maths will be built onto your course if your grades are below 4/5.
