Digital Industries - Level 3 Extended Diploma in Computer Games Development UAL at Wakefield College
Ever dreamt of being a designer, concept artist, story writer or 3D modeller in the Computer Games industry? Are you creative and aspire to work as part of a dynamic team designing big name games? If you want to do more than simply play games, then our Level 3 Computer Games Design course is the first step on the path to part of this exciting industry. The course is delivered by lecturers with over 40 years' combined Games Industry experience who have worked on some of the biggest titles in the industry including FIFA, Driver, and Worms. As well as Computer Games Design the course develops transferable skills that could lead you into a career in fields such as computer animation, digital graphics or web design. If you are creative and passionate about studying the design of computer games (not just playing them!), as well as committed to developing your skills in all areas, including drawing, then this is the ideal course for you. You should be prepared to work hard to produce imaginative assignments, enjoy creative design as well as written work, and have a great interest in all aspects of the Games Industry. You must also be very good at meeting deadlines.
The course is based in our dedicated computer games studios using industry standard software such as 3ds Max, Photoshop, Unity, and Unreal Engine 4 Kit You don’t need prior experience as you will learn all the software by starting with the basics. Good drawing ability is not essential, but creativity plays a big part in all the stages of designing computer games. You must be able to develop creative ideas on paper and be willing to work on your drawing skills using traditional media.
4 GCSEs at A*-C (new grade 9-4) including English and Maths
4 GCSEs at A*-C (new grade 9-4)
Level 2 Functional Skills in either English or Maths, and
Grade D (new grade 3) or Level 1 Functional Skills in the other
L2 Diploma or equivalent at Merit Grade, plus GCSE English or Maths at grade C (or new grade 4), plus L1 or L2 English or Maths
You will be assessed through assignments and practical project work that count towards your final grade. Your tutor will provide regular feedback and maintain a record of assessment. All student work may be externally verified.
Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18 years old. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, residentials etc which are payable by all students.
Any student entered/registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and then withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any resit examination will incur a cost.

Each year of the course is equivalent to 1.5 A Levels. At the end of Year 2, you could achieve between 72and 168 UCAS points, depending on the grades you have achieved throughout the two years. You could progress onto courses such as Computer Games Design or Development, Animation, Digital Graphics, Web Design and Multimedia at Higher Education level. Students interested in Indie Games Development could progress to the Foundation Degree in Independent Games Development at Wakefield College
