Mathematics (MEI) AS Level at Grantham College

Course description

This course would suit the student who enjoys complex algebra.

Course content

Course Content: AS Level Year one: Typical module content: Begins with a revision of GCSE topics such as equations and coordinate geometry, and extends the ideas to irrational numbers and inequalities. In addition, there is a great deal of work on extended Algebra concepts.(C1) Introduction to Advanced Mathematics (C2) Concepts for Advanced Mathematics: These cover the basic techniques required throughout the whole course. The National Curriculum is built on to lay down foundations for advanced work on calculus, trigonometry, coordinate geometry and algebra. Plus one of the following: Statistics 1 (S1) - introduces statistical techniques to analyse data, building on the National Curriculum. Topics covered are exploring data, sampling and hypothesis testing with the binomial distribution. Mechanics 1 (M1) - introduces the concept of mathematical modelling in applications involving forces, Newton's laws of motion and projectiles.

Entry requirements

Grade B GCSE Maths or equivalent.There is an initial test to determine your readiness to begin this course. You should seek guidance before enrolment.


All modules have a 1.5 hour examination. C3 also has coursework. C4 has a 1 hour comprehension paper.

Financial information

Full Time Further Education courses are free for those who are under 19 on 31 August of the year they start their course.  Exam resit fees may apply if and when applicable.

Future opportunities

Further studies of A2 maths or eventual progression onto mechanics or engineering.
