Creative Digital Media Production level 3 OCR Cambridge Technical at St Peter's RC High School & Sixth Form Centre

Course description

The 21st Century world is a world driven by the media. Young people’s lives are intrinsically linked to and influenced by a constant stream of media products: the latest Xbox One game, You Tube hit, social media application or a blockbuster film. Media Studies gives students the skills and understanding to analyse any media text, to think about how it is made, who it is made for and what it is saying about the world.

We offer two distinct options for study: the more academic and theoretical A-level course in media studies or a more hands on and practical approach in the creative digital media production course.

Course content

Learners will explore and analyse the ideas and arguments from debates about the media. These debates will be drawn from historical perspectives, the digital age and global media. Learners will practically explore the creation of three linked media products in a cross-media production

The course will explore the following topics:

  • media language: how the media through their forms, codes, conventions and techniques communicate meanings.
  • media representations: how the media portray events, issues, individuals and social groups.
  • media industries: how the media industries’ processes of production, distribution and circulation affect media forms and platforms.
  • media audiences: how media forms target, reach and address audiences, how audiences interpret and respond to them and how members of audiences become producers themselves.

Learners will study nine different media forms: television, film, radio, newspapers, magazines, advertising and marketing, online, social and participatory media, video games and music videos.
