A Level Art Textiles at Brentwood Ursuline Convent High School

Course description

The Art textiles ‘A’ level course (ARtD) provides students with opportunities to develop personal responses to practical and critical/contextual work in one or more areas including fashion, printed and/or dyed fabrics and materials, domestic textiles, wallpaper, interior design, constructed textiles and installed textiles. Students follow the Art textiles course which offers huge flexibility and opportunities for creative development.

Students will explore drawing using a variety of methods and media on differing scales using sketchbooks/workbooks/journals to support their work where appropriate and produce more than one final textile outcome. Students will develop a variety of textile methods such as fabric printing (mono-printing, screen printing), tie-dye, batik, transfer, fabric construction and stitching (appliqué, patchwork, padding and/or embroidery), central to Art textiles practice in the industry.

Entry requirements

A level textiles Design students are required to have;

  • ‘A’ level Art Textiles students are required to have;
  • GCSE B grade or above in Art or Textiles
  • A real interest in Art Textiles
  • Awareness of the elements of Art Textiles such as shape, colour, texture, pattern, harmony, contrast and/or repetition
  • An appreciation of the relationship of form and function and, where applicable, the constraints of working to a brief
  • An ability to work independently
  • A willingness to explore various techniques, processes, media and ideas with an open mind
  • A hard working approach to the subject
  • An ability to be innovative and original
