Law AS and A2 level at Monks Walk School

Course description

AS Law is made up of two mandatory units. First is the English Legal System, where candidates are expected to have knowledge and understanding of the legal profession, civil and criminal courts, police powers, the penal system and the judiciary. The second is Sources of Law which presents them with the knowledge and understanding of precedent, legislation, European Union law, and law reform. Students will also look at the impact of European Union law on domestic law and legal institutions.

A2 Law focuses on the general principles of criminal liability and provides an in-depth study of criminal behaviour from the most minor of crimes, such as Common Law Assault, to the most serious, such as Murder and Manslaughter. The law of torts is also studied at A2. Tort is a very interesting and topical area and is a branch of civil law and covers such things as negligence and liability for civil wrongs. By applying the law to factual situations, students will be able develop a critical awareness and appreciation of the role of criminal law in modern society, as well as gain an insight into the rich case law that surrounds our Criminal Law.
