Art & Design BTEC National Level 3 Extended Certificate at Garibaldi College

Course description

The main aim of the course is to develop your ability to appreciate the visual world in a personal and creative way. You will develop a working knowledge of materials, processes and technologies within art and design contexts and develop an in depth understanding and appreciation of Art History.

The best foundation for success is a good grade at Level 2 BTEC; this is good training for the correct work ethic for Level 3 study. Coursework covers both 2D and 3D outcomes and students are encouraged to explore their own avenues of study within assignment briefs. This is an exciting course which aims to equip you for the world of work or further education study.

Course content

The qualification gives a coherent introductions to the study of art and design at this level. Learners develop art and design projects and gain an understanding of the creative process. They study visual recording and communication, critical analysis and production skills to produce art and design outcomes. 

Entry requirements

BTEC Level 2 Merit or above in Art and Design.


This is a 360 guided learning hour qualification and is structured as follows: Four units of work; of which three are mandatory and one is an optional unit.

Year 1:

  • Unit 1: Visual Recording and Communications
    (120 GLH) Externally Assessed
  • Unit 2: Fine Art, Materials, Techniques and Processes
    (60 GLH) Internally Assessed

Year 2:

  • Unit 3: Critical and Contextual Studies in Art and Design
    (90 GLH) Externally Assessed
  • Unit 4: The Creative Process
    (90 GLH) Internally Assessed
