Introduction to Hospitality and Catering Level 1 at Lancaster and Morecambe College

Course description

This course is designed to give you a broad range of cookery skills and will form an introduction into the hospitality industry. The practical classes will include food preparation and food service. The theory lessons will cover the essential knowledge and will complement the required assignment work. 

Course content

You will study the following: • Health and Safety • Food Hygiene • Healthy Eating • Kitchen Equipment Practical tests will be based around different aspects of cooking. All LMC students will receive tutorial support and take a programme of Functional Skills including English, maths and ICT. 

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grade D-G preferably including English or maths. Entry criteria will be applied at the discretion of the course manager.


This course is continuously assessed using a range of methods including assignments and practical performance.

Financial information

You will need to purchase a uniform for kitchen and restaurant, knives and text books. 

Future opportunities

The course can lead onto the Level 2 Certificate in food and Beverage Principles, Level 2 Diploma in Hospitality and Catering, or an Apprenticeship in Hospitality and Catering/Food and Drink Service Apprenticeship. 

Further information

On completion you will receive a Level 1 Certificate in Skills for Employment and Further Learning. 

You will be expected to undertake occasional home study on this course.
