Geology A Level at Newcastle Sixth Form College

Course description

Geology develops your appreciation of how society makes decisions about scientific issues, and how the sciences contribute to the success of the economy and society. You will also develop an appreciation of geodiversity, the finite nature of the Earth’s resources and the need for geoconservation.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at A*-C which should include English and Maths.

If you have not achieved a GCSE Grade C or above in English and/or Maths, you will be required to re-sit these exams during your AS year.

If you would like to study AS Maths or a science subject, you must achieve a grade B or higher in GCSE Maths plus a grade B (double award Science requires BB) in the science subject you wish to study.

Other Level 2 qualifications from the National Qualifications Framework, including BTEC First Diplomas and OCR Nationals, will be considered on an individual basis at the college’s discretion.

Assessment

This subject is delivered through various methods including debates, lectures, practical lessons, fieldwork, self-supported study and resource based learning. Assessment consists of written exams and coursework.

Future opportunities

Possible career fields include; conservation, environmental economics, soil science, consultant, land surveyor, geologist, civil engineer and mining.
