Independent Living at Newbury College

Course description

This course is a full time personalised programme, which aims to provide a very real alternative to an Independent Specialist Provider. The course is full time and runs for 38 weeks in total. The course will enable learners to develop skills and confidence in both Life and Work skills. Learners will have the services of a full time Key Worker, who will work with them for the full day. This will be both onsite at College, as well as supporting them in the community. This will include work experience and support in their College based learning. It is expected that they will achieve accreditation for work completed at College. The local authority panel will ultimately decide which learners they can offer a place to in conjunction with the College and families.


The content of the course will cover the following: Well-being training Looking after yourself College based activity Education Community-based activity Work placement and job coaching Community related activities Travel training

Learners can expect to carry out and achieve travel training skills, accessing the local community, participating in enrichment, as well as following a course of individual study, which will support their life skills and work skills.

Entry requirements

All students will be assessed. The final decision will be taken with the College and local authority panel. All offers of enrolment are subject to local authority approval.


Each week student progress will be reviewed. Students will work towards gaining full independence with learning goals. Each student will have a bespoke individualised programme, which will include accredited learning. Assessment will be by observation, discussion, formal review and weekly meetings.

Students can progress from full support to independence.
