Spanish A Level at Cedars Upper School

Course description

The specification for A’ level is designed to:
 develop students’ range of vocabulary and become increasingly confident, accurate
and independent users of the language
 enhance their linguistic skills and foster their ability to learn other languages
 develop language learning skills and strategies, including communication strategies, to
sustain communication and build fluency and confidence
 develop knowledge about matters central to the society and culture, past and present,
of countries where Spanish is spoken
 equip them with transferable skills such as autonomy, resourcefulness, creativity,
critical thinking, and linguistic, cultural and cognitive flexibility that will enable them to
proceed to further study or to employment.

Course content

There are two topic areas, divided into sub-themes:
1. Social issues and trends
i. Being a young person in Spanish-speaking society
ii. Diversity and difference
2. Political, intellectual and artistic culture
i. Understanding the Spanish-speaking world
ii. The two Spains: 1936 onwards
In addition to the topics, students study two works from Spanish cinema, theatre and
literature. Students will also undertake an independent research project in Year 13 on a
topic of their choice, which will be examined during the speaking exam.

Entry requirements

Because of the academic nature of the course, we would prefer students to have gained a grade 6 at GCSE level.

Assessment

Component 1: Speaking
 Presentation (2 mins) followed by discussion (9-10 mins) on a topic you have
chosen and researched
 Discussion of a stimulus card
Component 2: Listening, reading and writing
 listening comprehension
 reading comprehension
 translation into English
 translation into Spanish
Component 3: Writing
Either one essay on a set text plus one essay on a set film or two essays on set texts.

Financial information

Students normally need a good quality dictionary , approximately £15-20
An exchange visit to Madrid (optional but recommended), approximately £300

Future opportunities

Studying a modern language at A Level can help you to get in to university as it is one of the Russell Group’s ‘facilitating’ subjects. In addition to the obvious jobs where languages are used, there are opportunities in many professions e.g. law, accountancy, banking, engineering, etc to gain extra experience by working abroad, if you have language skills.
