A Level English Language at The King's Academy

Course description

This A-Level will comprise 4 units, 2 at AS level and 2 at A2 level. We will be following AQA specification B for Language.

Content of course

AS Level

Unit 1 (60% of AS by examination, 30% of A level) Categorising Texts - this Unit introduces students to the study of English Language requiring them to study a variety of texts both fiction and non fiction. In addition students will focus on Language and Power; Language and Gender and Language and Technology.

Two questions, one on each section, will be set in the examination.

Unit 2 (40% of AS by coursework, 20% of A level) Creating Texts - this Unit will require students to students to produce two pieces of coursework in a style, form and genre of their own choosing then write a short analysis of the choices they made when writing the texts.


Unit 3 (30% of A level by examination) Developing Language - this Unit will require students to study two aspects of Language: Child Language Acquisition and Language Change. Students will answer one question on each aspect of study in the examination.

Unit 4 (20% of A level coursework) Investigating Language - this Unit will require students to choose a topic for Language Investigation and write a study of between 2000 and 4000 words outlining their research and findings.

Entry requirements

At least a grade B at GCSE
