Mathematics A Level at Tiffin School

Course description

Mathematics is a very popular choice at Tiffin. In an increasingly technological age, the skills and insights gained through a course in Mathematics are highly valued by employers. Maths is also an entry requirement for many Higher Education courses. In addition to rigorous preparation for A Level modules we strive to retain an excitement in the subject and offer opportunities for further involvement, for example through participation in the UK Maths Challenge at senior level and through an extended project. There is also the option to study Further Maths in addition to Maths A Level:

The new A Level in Maths is taught over two years and assessed by three papers: two in Core Maths and one in Statistics and Mechanics.

Maths and Further Maths
The full A Level in Maths is taught in one year and students normally take their A level at the end of Year 12. The first year of course is completed with about 40% more teaching time than the ‘single’ Maths course, and can be accompanied by either two or three other subjects taken in Year 12. Students then opt to study either AS Further Maths or A Level Further Maths in Year 13 and this is usually accompanied by two other subjects.

The A Level Further Maths course comprises two Further Pure Maths papers and two additional papers where you can choose to specialise in Mechanics, Statistics, Pure
Maths or a combination of these. Those choosing to continue only with AS Further Maths take one Further Pure Paper and one additional paper. The course is very
suitable for very able mathematicians considering reading Maths, Engineering, Physics, Economics or Computer Science at university, or indeed, anyone who relishes an intellectual challenge.
