Engineering - BTEC Extended Diploma in Manufacturing Engineering level 3 at Kirklees College, Huddersfield Centre

Course description

This level 3 course offers a route into the exciting world of engineering technology.

Course content

You will study 5 mandatory units:

  • Health and safety in the engineering workplace
    • This unit will give you an understanding of hazards and risks associated with health, safety and welfare in an engineering workplace, the associated legislation and regulations and of your role in complying with the related legal obligations. You will also be required to undertake full risk assessments and to appreciate the significant risks encountered in the workplace and the measures taken to deal with them.  You will also study the principles of reporting and recording accidents and incidents, again within a legal context.
  • Communications for engineering technicians
    • This unit gives you the opportunity to apply the wide range of communication methods used within engineering. These methods include visual representation, verbal and written skills, obtaining and using information and the use of information and communications technology.
  • Engineering project
    • The unit aims to integrate the knowledge and skills you have gained throughout your programme of study into a major piece of work that reflects the type of performance expected of an engineering technician. The project is intended to develop your ability to identify and plan a course of action and follow this through to produce a viable solution/outcome to an agreed specification and timescale.
  • Mathematics for engineering technicians
    • This unit aims to give you a strong foundation in mathematical skills. These skills will help you to successfully complete many of the other units within the qualification.  This unit enables you to build on knowledge gained at GCSE or BTEC First Diploma level and use it in a more practical context for your chosen discipline.

And either

  • Mechanical principles and applications
    • This unit gives learners the opportunity to extend their knowledge of mechanical principles and to apply them when solving engineering problems. This unit provides a basis for further work in the areas of mechanical principles, engineering thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and other related applications of engineering science.


  • Electrical and electronic principles
    • This unit aims to give learners an understanding of the underlying physical principles on which electrical and electronic devices and circuits depend. For those wishing to follow an electrical/electronic programme this unit is an essential building block that will provide the underpinning knowledge required for further study of electrical and electronic applications.

You will also study 12 of 42 optional units, including:

  • Engineering design
  • Computer aided drafting in engineering
  • Welding technology
  • Electronic circuit design and manufacture
  • Teamwork in a continuous improvement environment
  • Composite materials and processing

The practical elements of the course are backed up with underpinning knowledge.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 5 GCSEs with the following grades: 6 in maths, 5 in English or above and 3 other GCSEs at 4 or above including science or a technology based subject. 


Through a series of assignments for each unit.

Financial information

As a full time student you should not need to pay any course or examination fees (under 19).

There may be a cost for equipment, educational visits, printing etc.

Future opportunities

Higher National Diploma in Engineering, certificate or degree at university, or an Apprenticeship.
