Course description


This course will introduce you to all the major philosophical and ethical theories, beginning with the work of Plato and Aristotle. You will examine, analyse and discuss the work of scholars such as Kant, Mill and Descartes as well as explore some of the major philosophical and ethical issues we face in today’s world, such as the debate between religion and science, the problem of evil, conscience, sexual ethics and war.


This element of your A Level will enable you to deepen your knowledge and understanding of the issues above as well as developing your skills of comparison analysis and evaluation to a highly sophisticated level. This is done through deeper study of the work of controversial scholars such as Richard Dawkins and John Hick. Furthermore we consider and evaluate contencious issues such as business ethics, life after death, environmental ethics and sexual ethics

Entry requirements

The minimum requirement for a GCE AS/A2 course is 6+ grades A*-B at GCSE or equivalent. For a student to study at GCE AS/A2 a subject that they studied at GCSE they must have achieved at least a grade B in that subject at GCSE where the subject requires previous study
