Course content

This course is designed to enable pupils to investigate the relationship between nutrition, food choice and health and to examine the nature, function, application and implications of food processing in the home.
Nutrition and Health
This section of the specification requires knowledge and understanding of nutritional guidelines, energy from foods and the relationship between nutrition and health.
Food choice
This section of the specification requires the ability to make informed choices regarding a healthy diet, the effect of the availability of food products and personal preference.
Food preparation, processing and safety
This section of the specification requires knowledge and understanding of food preparation, processing and safety.
The role of the consumer
The section of the specification introduces factors to consider when choosing goods and services in relation to food and associated equipment.


  • The course is assessed as one tier only.
  • Your final examination will account for 40%.
  • Your coursework will account for 60% one shorter piece in Year 10 and a lengthier piece in Year 11 and you choose a topic that interests you.
  • Coursework provides you with the opportunity to investigate, make and evaluate food.

Future opportunities

Candidates will develop knowledge and practical skills which provide a natural progression towards further vocational studies such as NVQ Food Preparation and Cooking, the Caring Professions or Science based qualifications/careers.

Healthy eating pratical, dishes using convenience foods and those providing a good source of the various nutrients.
