Engineering Level 1 at North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College
This qualification is designed to provide you with an introduction to the Engineering sector, giving you the opportunity to develop basic techniques, allowing you to demonstrate and recognise how engineering can open up an exciting career. With an emphasis on practical study in our outstanding manufacturing workshops, this course will provide you with the knowledge and skills to be able to carry out basic manufacturing processes including, hand-fitting, electrical engineering and maintenance techniques. You will also learn some generic engineering skills that can apply to many different types of engineering, including, interpreting engineering drawings and engineering marking out. It is expected that you would undertake some work experience as part of the course, this is usually in the form of voluntary projects coordinated by the tutors. We run a series of taster session during the year for you to come and have a go at Engineering to see if this is the right choice for you.

Although there are no formal entry requirements, a good standard of English and Maths is helpful. A practical attitude and ability to study at GCSE Level is also required. You will also sit a basic skills assessment in Maths and English to assess whether extra support is needed in both of these areas.
You will be assessed throughout the year using your portfolio of evidence and tests. There is an online exam which assesses the Health and Safety aspect of the course. Whilst taking one of our full-time courses you will also complete a programme of Functional Skills which could comprise of a combination of English, Maths and ICT. These Functional Skills are an essential requirement for employment progression, higher education and other further education courses.

This could be help with the cost of travel, books, materials, equipment, uniforms, childcare and examination and registration fees. Once you have completed this course, you will be able to go onto study the Level 2 Engineering or progress onto a Level 2 Apprenticeship, where you will develop your skills further and then be ready to go and work in the industry.
