Course description

A Level Sociology allows students to develop a range of transferable skills including independent research, interpretation and analysis of data, evaluation of theoretical debates and empirical evidence, production of well-focused written reports and essays, team work and presentation skills. Students are encouraged to read widely around the topics covered in class

Course content

Year 12

Sociology is the study of modern society.

In Year 12 the course includes units on

  • Families and Households
  • Culture and Identity
  • Education.

Year 13

  • Paper 1: Compulsory topics. Education, Methods in Context and Theory and Methods
  • Paper 2:
    • Option 1 (One topic from this option) Culture and Identity, Families and Households, Health, Work, Poverty and Welfare
    • Option 2 (One topic from this option) Beliefs in Society, Global Development .The Media, Stratification and Differentiation
  • Paper 3: written exam paper 2 hours. Compulsory topics Crime and Deviance. Theory and Methods

Entry requirements

Grade B in GCSE Sociology if taken. If not a grade 6 in GCSE English Language or B in humanities subject.

Minimum point score of 38 including Maths and English at grade 4 at GCSE. This is equivalent to 4B and 4C grades overall at GCSE. Students will also need to achieve the subject specific criteria below:

Paper 1: written exam paper 2 hours.
