Beauty Therapy Diploma Level 2 at PETROC

Course description

This is an exciting course where you will learn specialist skills that will support you becoming a successful beauty therapist including facials, make-up. nail art, eyebrow and eyelash treatments, manicure, pedicure, nail art and waxing. The course is 40% theory and 60% practical and you will have use of professional facilities and products as well as making your own.

You will train in our fully equipped beauty salon with access to up to date equipment and resources.

Course content

On this study programme, you will learn the creative skills of a beauty therapist, including make-up, manicure, pedicure and nail art, facial skin care, eyelash and brow treatments and waxing. You'll also have the chance to acquire valuable practical know-how too, including health and safety, sales skills, reception skills and salon procedures. Enrichment activities are offered including individual eyelash extensions and threading. These vary depending on current trends in the business. 

You will compile a portfolio of evidence to show the skills you are developing by completing treatments on clients.

Entry requirements

All entrants must hold 4 GCSEs at grade D or equivalent or above, to preferably include GCSE Maths at grade 3 or above and GCSE English Language at grade 3 or above.
Entrants holding a grade 2 or a 3 in GCSE Maths will study towards GCSE Maths to gain grade 4 or above. Those with a grade 1 or below will study Level 1 Functional Skills Maths and retake GCSE Maths in the following year.

Entrants holding a grade 2 or a 3 in GCSE English Language will study towards GCSE English Language to gain grade 4 or above. Those with a grade 1 or below will study the Level 1 Functional Skills English and retake GCSE in the following year. 

At the end of the year all learners are expected to have completed and achieved all the components of their Level 2 Study Programme and achieved a graded improvement in their Maths and English Language studies before being allowed to progress.

However, if you are a part time mature learner then a willingness to learn is required.


All practical skills are monitored by continual assessment with an experienced assessor in our fully equipped up to date beauty salons. Some parts of the course will be assessed in the form of short online exams or through assignments depending upon what is best for you as a learner.

Future opportunities

Following the successful completion of all aspects of the programme, you will be ready to progress on to a Level 3 beauty related programme such as Body or Spa, nail technician or a level 3 apprenticeship. Some learners choose to enter employment in the beauty sector in salons, spas or beauty counters.

Q. Will I need a kit for this course and how much will it cost?
A. Yes you will need to purchase a kit containing your tools and products for the course. Each kit costs approximately £300, but there are mean tested bursaries towards the cost.

Q. Will I be expected to wear a uniform?
A. Yes, it is a requirement that you wear professional attire for all your practical salons. This will include a tunic, you will receive an order form for the tunic, black trousers and flat black shoes. 

Q. Why is there a choice to do online tests or assignments?
A. Each learner can choose to do the multiple choice test or assignments. Often learners chose to do a combination of both assignments and online tests. 

Q. How many days will I be expected to be in college?
A. You will be expected to be in college for approximately 4 days.

Q. Can I still have a part time job and study?
A. Yes, you can have a job, however we recommend that you only work for 10 hours a week.
