English IB (English as Additional Language) at Impington Village College

Course description

These courses arefor students for whom English is an additional language. Itmay also appropriate for those who are bilingual and who may want to study one of their languages in Group 1 and the other in Group 2.

TheEnglishLanguage and Literatureprogramme has been designed to give students a high level of competence in English and aims to broaden their understanding of the cultures where English is the medium of communication as well as to develop the skills involved in speaking and writing in all sorts of situations; it also aims to develop critical and essay-writing skills through the close examination of a wide range of literary and non-literary texts.

During the course you will engage in the discussion of key global issues, looking at the national and international implications they entail. You will explore the impact of the media on societies globally and engage in the detailed study of literary works; these include works written in English from several parts of the anglophone world and will introduce you to the variety of cultures that contribute to the canon of 'English' literature. This is one of the courses where the IB mission statement, with its emphasis on global citizenship, is most clearly illustrated.

English B is for students who require more emphasis on the grammar and vocabulary components of English.

The courses end with a combination of assessments of your progress and achievements. There are two written examinations, externally marked; these test your understanding of the content of the course. You will also be required to complete two written coursework assignments on topics arising from the course; these are also externally assessed. The oral assessment is internal and involves a variety of prescribed spoken tasks, designed to demonstrate your competence in spoken English.

The courses are varied and lively, enabling a very stimulating exchange of ideas and information on such issues as peace and conflict, human rights and global warming, and reflections on many different cultures.

    • Impington International College is unusual, to say the least, and is possibly unique amongst state education providers. The chance for young people from all over the world to work and socialise together gives tremendous opportunities for broadening cultural horizons, increasing understanding and challenging preconceptions. Impington International College offers a wide range of courses and programmes: BTECs and, since 1991, the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), followed recently by the International Baccalaureate Careers Programme (IBCP). At the heart of all of our provision is the IB mission statement, which aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. We actively encourage our students to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right. We have a good balance between overseas and UK students who come here to take the IBDP & IBCP and those who follow the BTEC route and others who are attracted by Impington’ s superb reputation in the area of Performance. We want outstanding achievement for all our students no matter what path they choose to follow. Our tutorial system and small class sizes ensure lots of individual attention but we encourage students to be independent and think for themselves. Our alumni are welcomed everywhere from Cambridge or St Andrew’s Universities, to The Place and Italia Conti; from Maastricht or Japan to UCAL. If you are prepared to challenge yourself to the full and if the opportunity to learn in an international environment motivates you, Impington International College will be the right place to prepare you for the next stage of your life.
