A Level English Literature at The Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls
We have yet to decide on the A Level specification though for the Literature it is most likely that we will focus on a Shakespearean tragedy in Year 12. In order to prepare for this we are planning to take a group of Year 11 students to see ‘Othello’ at The Globe Theatre in March 2015.
It is very likely that we will teach both AS and A Level together which means students will sit the AS exam at the end of Year 12. The AS Level will be a separate qualification and will not be worth 50% of the A Level as is currently the case. For students who continue with the two year course, the texts they study in Year 12 will also feature in the final A Level exam. There will be no coursework at AS Level as is currently the case; the coursework element which will be known as ‘Non Exam Assessment’ is worth 20% of the final A Level and will be completed in Year 13.
It is preferred that students have 2 B grades at GCSE English Language and English Literature. Applications from students with BC will be considered.
A degree in English is universally recognised as a ‘heavyweight’ subject which employers will recognise and be likely to give preference for in a competitive job market.
A degree in Law, Architecture, History – most degree courses would welcome an A Level English qualification.
