Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art & Design (Graphic Design) at West Kent College

Course description

Develop the digital and art based skills and understanding that are fundamental to be a practitioner in the graphic design industry.

In year 1 you will work towards the Level 3 Diploma in Art and Design, if you achieve this you can progress onto year two and work towards the Extended Diploma.

You will develop your visual problem solving skills through a series of practical projects in order to produce work to a commercial standard.

As well as graphic design processes, the course enables the essential exploration of the wider aspects of art to broaden your understanding of the creative process and visual communication. Therefore there will be sessions in drawing, illustration, print making, photography, 3D and mixed-media.

In terms of your digital skill-set, the syllabus is designed to enhance and extend your understanding of creative digital programs including Maya 3D, animation software, Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, as well as video editing using Premier Pro and After Effects.

You will also be required to complete a contextual studies assignment.

All projects emphasise the importance of research and the creative development of coursework, learning along the way about various influences and cultural references to allow for a more personal response. There are research trips each term to galleries and museums to support your studies.

Throughout the course you will develop your portfolio of work to aid your progression on to another programme of study or into employment.

You may also have opportunities to work on directed projects with live briefs and clients, and to exhibit your work externally.

The final project for each year will be self-initiated and is internally marked and externally moderated by the awarding body. At the end of each year this work will be exhibited in the College End of Year Exhibition.

Entry requirements

You will need five GCSEs at Grades A*-C/9-4, including English, maths and an art and design subject.

Alternatively a Level 2 First Diploma in Art and Design at Merit or Distinction, with a Grade C/4 GCSE in English and maths.
